Dr. Allan Thomas Kimmell, 89, of Topeka lived an awe-inspiring life and passed away on January 21, 2015. He was born in Cherokee, OK on May 18, 1925 to Etta Bernard and Robert Kimmell.

Dr. Kimmell grew up in Cherokee and volunteered to enlist in the US Navy at 17 years old, serving the Naval Armed Guard during World War II from 1943-1946. He graduated from Oklahoma A&M College (now known as Oklahoma State University) in 1952 with a degree in Veterinary Medicine, then opened and ran a private veterinary practice in Kiowa, KS serving Kansas and Oklahoma from 1952-1976. The way he cared for animals was a project of passion and a work of art. From 1976-1978, Dr. Kimmell was a Federal Meat Inspector and in 1978 he became the Kansas State Veterinarian. In 1985, he was appointed to the Kansas Dept. of Animal Health and served as the Livestock Commissioner for 5 years. He was also proud to be an active member of the Shriners and the Legion of Honor.

Dr. Kimmell was married to Betty L. (Liggenstoffer) Kimmell for 52 years until she passed away September 19, 2002.

He and July Hackerott enjoyed over 10 years of companionship, travel, and adventure. They attended Faith Community Church in Topeka.

Known as Doc, A.T., Allan, Dad, Grandpa, Grandad, and Great-Grandad, Dr. Kimmell is survived by a large and loving family and many friends. He had many stories, many sayings, and loved to laugh. He would be the first to say he lived a wonderful life.

Survivors include: sister, Margaret Kimmell of San Antonio, TX; sister-in-law, Doris May (Elmore) Kimmell; son, Bill Kimmell of Canyon, TX; his wife, Nik; grandson, Cody and Tessa Jobe, grandson Cade, his wife Dana; son, Richard Kimmell, M.D. of Olathe, KS; his wife Pattie; grandson Matt Angel; son, Jeff Kimmell, Ph.D. of Kiowa, KS; his wife Michelle; granddaughter Moira, grandson Spencer; and daughter, Karen Ann Kimmell of Ft. Sumner, NM; granddaughter Darcy, her husband Justin Norsworthy, great-granddaughter Holly and great-grandson Eli; granddaughter Dana; granddaughter Hannah, her husband Steven Burlbaw, great-grandson Colt.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Kiowa, Kansas District Hospital and the Masonic Shrine Legion of Honor.

A family and friends visitation will be held at the Fontainebleau Club House, 4231 SW Emland Dr., Topeka on Friday, January 23 from 10:30-11:30 am. A celebration of Allan's life will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, June 6, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church Parish Hall, Kiowa, Kansas.
