Harry C. Marling Jr., 96, of Lawrence, Kansas, formerly of Topeka, left his earthly home and entered into his Heavenly home on August 18, 2016. Born September 1st, 1919 to Harry Carson Marling and Irene Edith (Tripp) Marling in Topeka, Kansas, he was baptized at Trinity Church in Topeka. He attended Crane Junior High and graduated from Topeka High. After high school he worked for Ed Marling Stores in Topeka. He married Virginia Schmitt. They divorced. He married Betty Jane Magee. They were married sixty-six years.

Harry served his country during WWII in the South Pacific with the Merchant Marines. Harry and Betty moved to Hayward, California in 1948 where he was on the Hayward Fire Department. They returned to Topeka in 1955. Harry worked for J.C. Sargent Co. before joining the Gas Service Co. He retired as an Oil and Gas Procurement Agent at age 62. Harry was a rail fan having taken his family to California by train many times during the 50’s and 60’s.

He was preceded in death by his wife, father and mother; sister, Helene Trobee of Hayward, California, and brother, Bill Marling of Portland, Oregon.

Harry is survived by his sons, Deril “Oggie” Marling Schmitt (Donna), Coto de Caza, California, Randy Marling (Betty Jo), Lynchburg, Virginia, and daughter, Paula Haisch (Robert), Lawrence, Kansas ; grandchildren, Michael Schmitt (Sunny), Foothill Ranch, California, Matt Schmitt (Samantha), South Pasadena, California, Darick Schmitt (Melissa), Los Flores, California, Gretchen McCarter (James), Leawood, Kansas, Patrick Salsbury II (Melissa), Overland Park, Kansas, and Miguel Marling, Arlington, Virginia, and eleven great-grandchildren.

Per his wishes, Harry was cremated. Graveside services will be Thursday, August 25th at 11:00 a.m. at Rochester Cemetery in Topeka. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Midland Care, 200 SW Frazier Circle Topeka, KS 66606 or the Topeka Rescue Mission, P.O. Box 8350 Topeka, KS 66608.
