Wanda Rae (Riggs) Howard, 85, was born on September 24, 1930, in Burns, Kansas to Clifford A. Riggs and Velma (Fink) Riggs. She passed away on July 14, 2016, in Topeka, Kansas. She formerly lived in El Dorado, Kansas; Emporia, Kansas; Woodward, Oklahoma; Miami, Oklahoma; Montrose, Colorado; and Derby, Kansas.

She graduated from El Dorado High School, in 1948 from El Dorado, Kansas, and worked for Southwestern Bell as an operator and managed Best Western motels until retirement.

On August 2, 1953, she married James Wesley Howard, Jr., in El Dorado, Kansas and the following year their only son, Danny Ray Howard, was born on July 12, 1954.

Wanda is survived by her son, Danny Ray Howard (Goddard), two granddaughters Ashley (Howard) Charest and her husband Aaron Charest (Topeka), Chancy Howard (Goddard), step-grandchildren Brett Layman, Shynne Layman (El Dorado) and two great-grandchildren Ainsley Morgan Charest and Alexandria Murano Charest (Topeka).

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother Harold M. Goodwin.

Wanda has elected not to have any funeral service, but the burial service for herself and her husband Jim will be on August 2, 2016, at 11 am at the Burns Cemetery. That day would have been Jim and Wanda’s 63rd Wedding Anniversary. Immediately following the burial, family and friends are invited to the Burns United Methodist Church for a light lunch and social. No flowers requested, but donations may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, 1315 SW Arrowhead Road, Topeka, KS 66604.
