In Memory Of
Adolfo N. Pellegrini
1923 - 2016

Adolfo N. Pellegrini, MD died on January 26, 2016 at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka, Kansas. He was born in Torrette di Ancona, Italy on March 30, 1923, son of Emanuele and Fausta (Censi Mancia) Pellegrini.

He graduated from the Ancona Classical Lyceum in 1940, and from the Medical Schools of Bologna and Rome Universities in 1947. From 1948 to 1950, he served as Lieutenant MD in the Italian Navy, as well as Assistant Surgeon in hospitals in Rome and Ceccano. Unhappy with the Socialist predominance in Europe at that time, he immigrated to the United States in 1952. From 1952 to 1954, he served as an intern and then as a resident of surgery in East Orange and Hackensack Hospitals in New Jersey. From 1954 to 1957, he served as Chief Surgeon in Zavia (Zawiya), Libya. He returned to the U.S. in 1958, obtaining American citizenship in 1960. After completing his medical training at Ohio State University in Columbus, and at hospitals in Cleveland; Huntington, West Virginia; and Louisville, Kentucky, he joined the Topeka V.A. Hospital in 1962, where he worked for 30 years as Assistant Chief and Interim Chief of Surgery. He retired in 1992. He was American Board of General Surgery Certified and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, as well as a member of the Order of Physicians of Rome.

He was proud to serve the veterans of World War II (he met American soldiers for the first time in Italy in 1943-44), as well as the veterans of the Korean, Vietnam, and first Gulf Wars. He performed thousands of surgeries during those years and remained profoundly attached to the V.A. system and the veterans of those wars.

He married Doris O. Carlock on September 8, 1954. He is survived by his wife, Doris; daughters, Linda Pellegrini Bolis, Pennington, New Jersey, and Sandra Pellegrini, Topeka, Kansas; and son, Robert Pellegrini, Senigallia, Italy; grandchildren, Nadia Bolis, Davis, California; Daniel Bolis, Miami, Florida; and Joseph Hawker, Topeka, Kansas; and his sister, Maria Teresa Bezzi, Vaccarile, Italy.

He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Pellegrini, in 2015; his son-in-law, Giorgio Bolis, in 2011; by his parents; his brother, Enrico Pellegrini; and his sister, Gabriella Menchetti.

Cremation is planned. A Mass will be held at 10 am, Monday, February 8, 2016, at Most Pure Heart of Mary Church, 3601 SW 17th Street in Topeka. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Bob Woodruff Foundation to support injured veterans and their families (bobwoodrufffoundation.org).
