Fred W. Downey, 92, of Topeka, passed away Sunday, March 1, 2015, at Midland Hospice House. He was born July 5, 1922 in Weir, KS, the son of Ben and Jenny Downey. Fred graduated from Girard High School in Girard, KS.

Fred served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was stationed at St. John’s, Newfoundland, where he met and married his wife of 73 years, Ella Maude Moootrey. She survives of the home. Fred was a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service and retired after 34 years of service.

Fred is also survived by his children, Pam (Bill) Hoyt, Ward (Linda) Downey, Paula Downey and Steve Downey; ten grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Ralph and Ben; and two sons, James W. and Fred D. Downey.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, March 5, 2015 at Brookwood Covenant Church, 3601 SW 33rd Street, Topeka, KS 66614. A visitation will be held the evening prior from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the church. Burial will be at Penwell Gabel Cemetery in Topeka.

Memorial contributions may be made to Brookwood Covenant Church, 3601 SW 33rd Street, or the American Cancer Society.
