Mary E. Martinez, 66, of Topeka, wife of Fred Martinez, passed away Saturday, February 28, 2015.

She was born January 9, 1949, in Spearville, Kansas, the daughter of Fred and Ivra (Tieben) Heiland. She graduated in 1967 from Windhorst High School, Windhorst, Kansas.

Mary was employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone for 32 years, retiring in 2001.

She was a member of St. Matthews Catholic Church, Topeka, and a life member of The Telephone Pioneers.

Mary and Fred Martinez were married on August 7th, 1971. He survives the home.

Survivors include a daughter, Monique (Chris) Keith, Reading, KS; a son, Fritz Martinez, Topeka; a step- son, Alfred Martinez, Norfolk, VA.

Five grandchildren, Ali (Chris) Kennedy, Sarah Martinez, Chris (Sierra) Martinez, Jordan Martinez and Callum Keith.

Seven great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Liam Kennedy, Ramsi and Ronin Martinez, Madison, Marianna and Malulani Martinez.

Five siblings, Jerry (Rita) Heiland, Fred (Sue) Heiland, Monica (Pete) Carmichael, Bernie Heiland, Judy (Bob) Konrade.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Cale Henry Keith on December 29, 2013 and five siblings, Sylvester (Janet) Heiland, Tony (Mary Jo) Heiland, Norbert (Shirley) Heiland, Emogene (Johnny) Stevens, and Bill Heiland.

Mary’s greatest enjoyments included spending time with her grandchildren, visiting with friends on her deck, bird watching, and tending her flower gardens and Koy pond. She loved family gatherings and playing board games, garage sales, and lunches with friends.

Honoring her request, Mary was cremated. A memorial service will be 1:00 p.m., Friday, March 13, 2015 at Dove Cremation & Funeral Service, 4020 SW 6th Ave, Topeka. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service.

Interment of the cremated remains will be held at Reading Cemetery, in Reading, KS at a later date.
