She graduated from Washburn Rural High School in 1945. She attended K-State University and then received her teaching certificate from Washburn University. She taught school to eight grades at South Fairview and Liberty School. She received a degree in horticulture from an area Vo-Tech after she was in her 60's. She opened her own flower shop, Mom's Blossoms and Bloomers. She also was a 4-H horticulture leader and a Master Gardener. She wishes to be remembered by her flowers along 21st Street.
She married Lowell Sheets on June 3, 1949. They were divorced and he survives. Irene is also survived by her son, Dennis Sheets and her daughter, Linda Hager; ex-daughter-in-law, Cindy LaForge; ex-son-in-law, Mike Hager; grandchildren: Amy Karr, Casey Hager, Karen Swanson, and David Sheets; 8 great-grandchildren; and family friend, Jeff Myers.
A memorial service will be held at Dove Cremation & Funeral Service on December 19, 2017 at 3:00 PM. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service. The urn will be placed at Penwell Gabel Cemetery at a later date.
