She was a graduate of St. Mary’s School of Nursing, Manhattan, Kansas.
Elizabeth married George Berens on June 21, 1945. They spent 51 years together as a loving couple, working together as dairy farmers in Meriden and Valley Falls before spending their last years in Topeka
She enjoyed her family and spending time with her two children and extended family. Elizabeth was a gifted crafter, especially knitting; she knitted hundreds of hats and mittens for Head Start and Early Learning. She had a passion for being a nurse, working at Winchester Memorial Hospital and retiring from St. Francis Hospital. She also maintained a part-time nursing job her entire adult life. Elizabeth and her husband spent many hours volunteering with multiple organizations.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers; Gilbert and Raymond (Greta Jean), two sisters; Agnes (Robert) and Eunice (Dean) and her nephew, Bill.
She is survived by her two children; Cindy (Charles) Nothom and David Berens, one grandson; Chuck (Laurie) Nothom, one granddaughter; Angela Nothom, four great-grandchilren; Garick, Jeremy, Kelsi, and Isabella, four brothers; Donald, Dale, Oscar (Jean Frances) and Richard (Joyce) Krouse, one sister, Minnie Bradshaw, two sisters-in-law; Dolores (Con) Fischer, JoAnn (Leo) Kenealy, two brothers-in-law, Robert Berens, Jim Berens and countless nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
A memorial gathering for friends and family will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 pm on Friday, August 18, 2017 at Dove Cremation and Funeral Service, 4020 SW 6th Ave. Topeka. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at Westmoreland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Midland Care Connection for staff education for dementia care, 200 SW Frazier Cir, Topeka, Kansas 66606.
