Nola Wynn "Peggy" Davenport
1929 - 2017

Nola Wynn “Peggy” (Nutter) Davenport, 87, passed away April 18, 2017 in Hospice care at McCrites long-term care facility after suffering falls that left her with injuries from which she could not mend.

Generous. Welcoming. Loving. Friendly. Adventurous. Curious. Kind hearted. Intelligent. Musical. Beautiful. Gentle. Caring…just words but they help to describe this complex woman born May 7, 1929 in Fairbury, Nebraska to Hobart L. and Luella M. Nutter and was welcomed to the family by her brothers, Fayette and Darrell who loved her their entire lives. Nola was the last survivor of the Nutter Clan.

Her youth was spent on a 35 mile stretch from Fairbury south to Morrowville, Kansas. She spent many hours pumping gas for people at the family store and becoming an established dance skater in the family’s dance/skate halls. Peggy loved the times she was on skates.

Peggy excelled as a student, skater, singer and pianist. After graduating from Morrowville High School where she was a proud cheerleader for the Bulldog pack, her family moved to Topeka, Kansas where she attended Clark’s School of Business. Upon graduation she served Ned Fleming of Fleming Foods as an assistant in the late 1940s.

She married Warren William Davenport on August 28, 1948 and they shared life in the Topeka and Tecumseh areas. He preceded her in death on October 1, 2008. Most of their 60 years together were in Highland Park and she served her community anyway she could as the president of Highland Park Central PTA, president and many other positions with Highland Park United Methodist Women, baker of pies, Girl Scout cookie chairman, field trip driver, living nativity dresser, costume sewer and pianist to name a few. She worked by Warren’s side to create and operate the Davenport Construction Company.

Although she served her husband and community well, her main focus was in raising their children who all survive her: Monica Rose, Tecumseh, Stanton Davenport (Kathy), KC, MO., Bradford Davenport (Donna) Tecumseh, and Lori Davenport, Topeka. Nola also leaves many loving nieces and nephews.
“Grandma” was a role Nola cherished and she was adored by her 6 grandchildren Alison, Leslie, Meredith, Garrett, Grayson and Courtney, plus her 11 great-grandchildren Audrey, Piper, Quinn, Campbell, Sally, Shane, Kennedy, Declan, Sterling, Austen, and Bodhi. She made each child know that THEY were her favorite. She was keenly interested in their interests, they played endless games, sang songs, ate “orange” meals, grew flowers, identified birds, laughed, and she attended every event they had if at all possible. She was their rock.

Nola lived at McCrite’s Retirement Center for many years and she claimed it was the best place ever for her to live after Warren passed. She loved her friends at McCrites and all the things they did together.

World travel, casinos, Pinochle, Bingo, Farkle, square dancing, Jitterbugging, bird watching, fishing, sunbathing, flower gardening, jigsaw puzzles, crosswords & anagrams were some of her varied pleasures. But her all-time favorite was being a KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY fan. She followed every team, knew the players by name and wore the purple with great pride. Attending several Bowl games was the icing!

Now at the end of Nola’s earthly life, all who knew this Godly woman well, know she is dressed in purple with the Wabash Cannonball playing in the background and she is "right before the at" with her loved ones that have passed.
